Charles Catteau has produced worked ceramics, some of which are Art Deco and others Art Nouveau. He is strongly inspired by the animal world, working with a variety of sculptural techniques including earthenware and glazed ceramics.
The life of Charles Catteau
Charles Catteau (1880-1966) was a 20th-century ceramist working near Paris.
Born in Douai, he was the son of a Belgian father and a French mother. He trained at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, and left to work in Munich in 1904.
Recruited by Boch Frères, he moved to Belgium to change the artistic trajectory of the manufacture. He was inspired by non-Western arts (Japanese and African iconographic programs).
In 1925, he won the Grand Prix at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs Industriels et Modernes, which increased his success with the general public. He then exhibited at the Salon des artistes Français.
After the Second World War, he moved to Nice, where he continued to produce a few pieces. He died there in 1966, aged 86.
