The artist's works and style
An artist who was active mainly in Franche-Comté during the 20th century, Robert Fernier is not attached to any particular movement. He maintains strong links with the painting of Gustave Courbet, and produces landscape scenes - notably montages of his native region.
He works little with printmaking, and produces more drawings and oils on canvas.
The life of Robert Fernier
Robert Fernier (1895-1977) was a landscape painter from the Franche-Comté region.
After his secondary education, Fernier quickly took the path of painting, studying for this purpose at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. Not satisfied with the teaching, he left to study at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, with the support of Fernand Cormon. His career was halted by the war, however, and he was drafted into the French army in 1914. In 1919, he joined Fernand Cormon in his studio until 1924, when the painter died. His career took another turn in the late 1940s: like many of his colleagues, he chose to travel to the Orient. He successively visited Morocco, Algeria, Madagascar, Reunion Island, the Comoros archipelago and Polynesia, where he met his wife and settled for a few years.
He resumed his activity as a landscape painter in his native region in 1965.
Marked throughout his life by Courbet's work, and suffering a deterioration in his health, he drew up the catalog raisonné of works by the artist (who turned out to be his cousin - although he never knew about it). Thanks to his dedication, the Musée Courbet opened in Ornans in 1971.
The artist died in Burgundy-Franche-Comté at the age of 81.
Robert Fernier's imprint on his period
Robert Fernier made a lasting mark on his period on a national scale, but was not extremely well known during his lifetime. However, some collectors appreciate his work, and the majority of his canvases are kept in private homes.
