AVIATION Circular commemorative medal forming a pendant in gold (750 thousandths), the obverse with the left profile of Charles Nungesser (1892-1927), the reverse adorned with his fetish coat of arms, a heart centered on a skull and crossbones, two torches lit on either side, and a coffin above, all surmounted by the inscription "son fétiche". all surmounted by the inscription "son fétiche" ("his fetish"). Signed Maurice Faure and captioned. D. 2.2 cm. Weight: 9.7 g. History: Born in Paris, Charles Nungesser (1892-1927) was one of the "Aces of Aces" of the First World War. Fascinated by mechanics and the driving of racing cars and airplanes, he took part in one of the first automobile raids over the Andes in 1909. He entered the closed world of aviation in South America and made his name at air shows in Argentina and Uruguay. During the First World War, he was assigned to bomber squadron 106, based near Dunkirk. He made his mark during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, shooting down three enemy aircraft in the same day. For his aerial exploits, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1918. At the end of the war, Charles Nungesser set up a flying school in Orly. He died in 1927 aboard his L'oiseau blanc aircraft attempting to cross the Atlantic. Expert: Maxime Charron
