The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian
Oil on canvas
90.4 x 64 cm.
Variations on the "Saint Sebastian accompanied by a cherub" from the altarpiece commissioned from Titian for San Nicolo dei Frari (c. 1520-1525), also known as "Madonna and Child in Glory with Six Saints", now in the Vatican Pinacoteca (inv. MV.40351).
This composition of Saint Sebastian seems to have been a success, as we know of two other occurrences of covers with variants: one published by David Rostand (private collection, Titian's Saint Sebastian; Artibus et Historiae 30 (1994), pp. 23-39) and another, Saint Sebastian alone, formerly in the Florentine Contini Bonacossi collection (185.5 x 72 cm., Christie's London, July 7, 1972, no. 84).
