Style and technique of artist Jules Adler

Most of Jules Adler's work focuses on color nuances as well as realism work. He wanted to represent nature and people as they are, without adding anything. He opposes the Romantic movement, which distorts human expression and reality.

The life of Jules Adler

Jules Adler (1865 - 1952), a French artist, became a fairly important figure in the 19th-century art world.

He began his training at the École des Arts Décoratifs (where he followed the teachings of Bouguereau), then at the École des Beaux-Arts as well as the Académie Julian.

He exhibited for the first time at the 1888 Salon. He continued to exhibit extensively after this Salon.

His favorite subject was the depiction of workers, and he was dubbed the "painter of the humble" in his day. He won a gold medal at the Salon with a painting on the subject: Joies populaires. Like Jean Béraud, he takes sides in the Dreyfus affair, but on the other side. His house became a gathering place for the Captain's supporters.

He was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne in 1903.

During the First World War, he set up an artists' aid center in Pigalle, distributing food and clothing. In 1914, he left for a while to cover the Battle of Verdun as an artistic representative for the French government.

In 1928, he was appointed professor at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he finished his career and trained his nephew in painting.

In 1944, he was arrested and escaped deportation, but died in poverty in 1952.

The legacy of Jules Adler

Jules Adler, among all the painters of the 19th century, stood out for his naturalism and simple realism. He will paint workers, and soldiers on the front line : persona non grata to whom he will offer representation. He worked for equality and poverty for artists throughout his life, and made his contribution to the Dreyfus Affair.

Recognizing Jules Adler's signature

Adler signs his works in most cases, on the canvas at the bottom of the painting in a color that contrasts with the background. Occasionally, his works are unsigned.
